What it is

JS-2 starts with a real analog tremolo pedal, and not a stock one: the unit behind it carries a very well-known boutique mod. The pedal's own tone, the warmth of its input and output circuitry, comes from Neural Amp Modeler A2 (NAM A2), the same technology used to capture guitar amps, so what you hear has the character of the actual hardware.

The tremolo itself is schematic-based DSP, so it works the way the original does: it pulses your signal's volume up and down in time. RATE sets the speed, from a slow swell to a fast flutter. WAVE shapes each pulse, from a smooth sine through a triangle to a hard square. DEPTH sets how far the volume dips, all the way down to silence.

It was made and tested in a working recording studio, and it works great on guitar, keys, synths, pads and vocals. You get the sound of the pedal without the pedalboard, the cables or the hiss.

Three knobs

RATE (0.5–10 Hz), WAVE (sine, triangle, square and everything between) and DEPTH (from no tremolo to full chop). Every knob starts at noon.

Built on NAM A2

Neural Amp Modeler A2 for the tone, schematic-based DSP for the tremolo. Matched to the hardware within a tenth of a decibel.

Buffered Bypass

By default the footswitch is a clean bypass, linked to your DAW's. Turn on Buffered Bypass and it gives you the pedal's own buffered sound instead, like the hardware.

Auto-Calibration

Pick your audio interface or preamp from a list of over 90 and JS-2 drives the pedal's tone at the right level. Works on mono and stereo tracks.

Frequently asked questions

What is JS-2?

JS-2 is an analog-style tremolo plugin from Juniper Studio LLC. It is built from a real modded tremolo pedal, with Neural Amp Modeler A2 (NAM A2) for the tone and schematic-based DSP for the tremolo, and has three knobs (RATE, WAVE and DEPTH) and a footswitch.

What formats and computers does JS-2 run on?

On Mac: AU, VST3 and CLAP, for Apple Silicon and Intel, on macOS 12 or newer. On Windows: VST3 and CLAP. An AAX version for Pro Tools is coming soon.

Is JS-2 free?

You can download it and use the full plugin free for 30 days, with no account and no credit card. To keep using it, pay what you want for a license: $1 minimum, $10 suggested.

How do license keys work?

After you pay, your license key is emailed to you right away. Paste it into the plugin's Settings and click Activate. One key works on up to 10 of your machines, and you can deactivate a machine to move the license to a new computer.

Does JS-2 work on guitar, keys and vocals?

Yes. It works on mono and stereo tracks, and on guitar, bass, keys, synths, pads, vocals and busses. Auto-Calibration sets the right input level for your audio interface or preamp.

What do the RATE, WAVE and DEPTH knobs do?

RATE sets how fast the volume pulses, from a slow 0.5 Hz swell to a fast 10 Hz flutter. WAVE shapes each pulse: fully left is a smooth sine for a soft, round throb, noon is a triangle, and fully right is a square for a hard on/off chop, with smooth blends in between. DEPTH sets how far the volume dips, from no tremolo to full silence. Three factory presets (Classic Amp Tremolo, Helicopter Chop, Slow Pulse) get you started.

What is Buffered Bypass?

The real pedal doesn't just disconnect when you switch it off: your signal still passes through its buffer, which has a sound of its own. Turn on Buffered Bypass in Settings and the footswitch gives you that buffered sound, while your DAW's bypass button still bypasses the plugin completely.

What is NAM A2?

Neural Amp Modeler (NAM), created by Steven Atkinson, is an open-source technology for capturing the sound of real analog gear. JS-2 uses its A2 models for the pedal's tone, so it has the character of the actual hardware. The tremolo itself is schematic-based DSP.
